Extra Corporeal Shockwave Therapy or Shockwave uses high frequency sound waves, produced by a specialised probe focused on damaged tissue to stimulate healing. This technology was originally used for lithotripsy in human medicine to shatter kidney stones and for the treatment of non union fractures. It has now found its way into the equine medicine field for the treatment of a number of orthopaedic conditions. Successful outcomes are reported in the treatment of various conditions in a whole range of injuries in various athletic disciplines.
We have a portable Versatron focused shockwave machine which can be brought to the yard.
The procedure is usually performed under light sedation, takes approximately 15 minutes and therapeutic protocols often involve 3 - 4 treatments, which are carried out 2 - 3 weeks apart depending on the condition being treated.
