Dieting Tips
-
Be patient. Weight reduction should be a steady process to avoid metabolic problems.
-
Change both type and amount of feed gradually. Reduce feeds by no more than 10% over a 7-10 day period.
-
Track progress using a weight tape. If you reach a plateau then gradually decrease rations again.
-
EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE. Gradually build time and intensity as fitness improves.
-
Plenty fresh water to aid in digestion.
-
Select High fibre feeds but low in total energy. Measure feeds accurately by weight – feed to the ideal weight of your horse.
-
Low fat feeds and steer clear of carrots and apples – high glycaemic index!
-
Switch from alfalfa hay. Haylage to mature grass or oat hay to reduce calories.
-
Feed horses separately. May also need to limit pasture intake. Consider grazing muzzle.
-
Balance diet based on age and activity level. Ensure vitamin, protein and mineral requirements met.
Once your horse has reached its ideal body condition, maintaining the proper weight is a balancing act. Exercise will be a key component. Obesity can seriously affect your horse’s health so communicate regularly with your vet and schedule regular check-ups during the diet!
