Dental Problems
Horses with dental problems may show obvious signs such as dropping feed or discomfort during ridden work, or they may show no noticeable signs at all. For this reason annual dental examinations are essential to your horse’s health.
It is paramount to catch dental problems early and the teeth should be checked as part of an investigation into any abnormal behaviour. Waiting too long may make certain conditions difficult to treat, notwithstanding the financial implications. Look for the following indicators to know when to seek veterinary attention:
- Loss of feed from mouth whilst eating (“quidding”), difficulty chewing or excessive salivation.
- Loss of body condition.
- Large or undigested feed particles in manure.
- Diarrhoea
- Head tilting bit chewing, tongue lolling, fighting bit or resisting bridling.
- Poor performance such as failing to stop, bucking or heavy on bridle.
- Foul odour from mouth or nostrils.
- Nasal discharge or swellings on face or jaw.
Oral dental exams should be an essential part of an annual physical examination, usually at the time of vaccination. Every exam provides the opportunity to perform routine dental maintenance. Your vet will be happy to provide annual dental checks in addition to routine and more complicated dental problems.
