Sarcoids

SARCOIDS

A 23 year old gelding was presented with a large pendulant swelling between its hind legs. It was reported to have been growing for some time.

On examination  the swelling was found to be a large sarcoid, suspended from the sheath by a thickened stalk. There were several smaller sarcoids close to the skin on either side of its hind legs. Attempts were made to remove the sarcoid under sedation and local anaesthesia, but the horse was too fractious, so removal was carried out under a short acting general anaesthetic.

The smaller sarcoids were banded to encourage removal.

Sarcoids are the most common skin tumour in horses and can affect hoses of all breeds, colours and ages. They are most commonly found between the hind legs but also are found on the head and face.

The cause of this disease is not entirely clear but it is thought to be a bovine papillovirus, spread by direct contact or via a vector such as flies. Often sarcoids are more prevalent in certain parts of the country which may be related to an infected fly population in that particular area.

Treatment can vary depending on the size and number, and the position on the particular horse. They can be left alone if the sarcoid is small and not presenting a problem, or, surgery, rubber band application, cryosurgery, BCG injections, radiation therapy, cytotoxic cream are other options.
